If you’re like me you wake up, snooze a little, get up groggily and pad into the kitchen. It’s not a time for my best breakfast ideas. Or any ideas for that matter. That’s why I go for the same old, same old breakfast. Usually something with a mule-like sugar kick and loads of carbs. Delicious, don’t get me wrong, I love the sugary, carby cereals. Fortunately (or is that unfortunately?) there’s lots of breakfast cereal brands out there to fill the gap. It’s now 7.48pm on a Monday night… …Perfect breakfast ideas time. So here’s some of my favourites: Liquid... [Read more...]
Breakfast cereal – a parent’s view

As a parent of three young children (and deep into middle age) I’m a lot more concerned about the food we eat. Especially at breakfast. Breakfast cereal is good. Right? For some reason most of us think cereals and especially muesli are good for us and our family. Of course, there are the obvious examples but surely grains and milk are are a healthy way to start the day. If only it were so. Are your kids eating a bowl of sugar? Eating a healthy breakfast or a bowl of sugar? Take 2 minutes and check the levels of sugar in the cereals your kids are eating. Go on, I’ll wait. Surprising... [Read more...]

Ahhh, breakfast…breaking the fast…’the most important meal of the day’. If it’s so great why is it so hard to have a healthy meal at breakfast? Many of us think eating cereal with a few slices of toast is a healthy start to the day. Many of us would be wrong! You are what you don’t eat Just take a look at the nutritional panel of the cereal you’re eating. Yes, even the so-called healthy muesli. While you’re at it also peek at the bread and the spread you’re using. Chances are you’re eating a great big bowl of sugar. Are you eating sugar... [Read more...]

Breakfast used to mean ‘breaking the fast’. In other words eating your first food after many hours. In today’s world it just means fast. No-one has time for cooking or complicated breakfast recipes in the week, especially the working week. But, that’s no excuse for eating badly in the morning. I think most of us have heard breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s just that not many of us treat it importantly. Looking at the supermarket breakfast aisle we’re faced with a wall of cereals all making some sort of health claim. To be perfectly honest... [Read more...]

There is no better way to start your day than with breakfast. Your body needs to ‘break the fast’ it’s been on for the last 8-10 hours since it’s last meal. We often place breakfast cereal in the ‘healthy’, ‘good for me’ category. It must be to do with the ingredients – grains, dried fruit and the milk we add. I wish it was so simple. Are you eating a healthy breakfast cereal or a bowl of sugar? More and more we’re becoming aware of just how much sugar many cereals contain. The sugar is either naturally occurring in the ingredients or... [Read more...]
Healthy Breakfast cereal. Is there such a thing?

I used to think breakfast cereal, especially museli, was pretty a healthy breakfast option. Now, with all the information available about what’s in many cereals I’ve changed my mind. I also think many others have changed theirs as well. Nothing good ever comes out of a box. I once heard this from a nutritionist friend when we were chatting about cereals. (Yes, I actually do chat about cereals). And when you look a bit closer at what’s in most breakfast cereals you’ll probably agree. It’s too easy to point the finger at the obvious culprits – the mass-produced... [Read more...]

Here’s a delicious irony. I love the the fact that eating is the best strategy to losing weight. Diets, especially those that demand complete and instant change to routine, in many cases are counter-productive. That is, after the diet you put the weight straight back on. Maybe even more weight than you lost. Plus, diets are plain boring, hard-work, anti-social and expensive. Much better to eat your way to weight loss or weight management. Or to general health and wellbeing for that matter. And there’s no better place to start than at breakfast. If you had just one weight loss strategy... [Read more...]

A big call…”Brilliant Breakfast Ideas”. But I’m ambitious and love to share a good idea. The biggest, most brilliant idea is to actually have breakfast. Maybe not a big idea to you but many people skip the most important meal of the day. The only thing you should skip in the morning are diets that don’t fill you up with natural, healthy, sustaining foods. There is one more thing you should skip (no, not a rope) and that is high carb, sugary, fortified cereals. You know, the ones that taste great and give you a surge of energy (a surge of sugar more like) but leave... [Read more...]
