Losing weight or maintaining a healthy lifestyle requires that a person make a commitment to eat the proper foods on a consistent and continual basis. This is difficult for most people without the help of diet meal plans. When a person uses diet meal plans they can plan ahead for occasions when healthy food would otherwise not be available.

Most people find that creating diet meal plans that are effective work best if made on pay day. Making meal plans on a weekly basis when a person gets paid every two weeks will usually result in week two requiring extra emergency shopping trips and more fast food.

When creating diet plans it is important that the person create an individual meal plan that meets their needs. For many people who eat several times a day, a standard 3 meal, 2 snack meal plan will not be effective. To benefit from a meal plan, it must be a doable plan that will keep a person from getting hungry. This means that it must include proper foods for all of the times that a person eats during the day.

Diet meal plans give an individual more control over how many calories are in the foods they eat on a daily basis. In addition, a person has control over the types of foods they are eating. The key to a healthier lifestyle is to eat healthier foods.

When each food group is covered on a daily basis in diet meal plans a person can easily lose or maintain weight. They will feel better, save time shopping and have a lower intake of fast and fried foods.

Including important fruits and vegetables in diet meal plans takes the guess work out of eating healthy. A person can plan each meal and snack to insure that it is providing the types of vitamins and minerals that are important for health. In addition, diet plans make it very easy to plan calorie intake without reducing food intake. An individual can decide on the healthy alternatives for snacks to replace foods that have more calories.

There are many diet meal plans available through different sources. When deciding on the meal plan that will be right for an individual it is important to think about eating habits and how a meal plan can be used to adjust the foods that are eating during the times when a person would normally be eating junk food. By incorporating healthy alternatives into the meal plan and having them on hand, one will find that staying on a diet is much easier.

When you have a busy life it can be hard to eat right. These healthy meal plans will help you save time, efforts, and still eat right.

A good way to start is by packing a lunch and skipping the fast food. Fast food is full of empty calories and costs a fortune over time. You could just have a sandwich but that isn’t very filling or nutritious. I prefer to take a full meal with me for lunch. If fast food is a must on some days then choose something from the light menu or a salad.

If your work place doesn’t have a refrigerator then you can get and insulated cooler. Then all you have to do is heat it up when you are ready to eat. I usually cook enough for several days at once and then just fix my plate before work and go. Another option would be to order healthy meal plans that suit your budget and dietary requirements.

When you put the meat on your plate then add some vegetables as well. These give you a lot more nutrition and energy. They also help you fill fuller. They have vegetables that come frozen if you don’t want the canned variety. Either way you can usually just put them on you plate and heat them up with the rest of your meal.

Baking and broiling meat is so much better for you than fried. If you don’t like the taste of baked meat or if you just want to jazz it up some then try coating it in bread crumbs or baking it in your favorite salad dressing. They have bread crumbs in different flavors and it helps lock in the juices to prevent meat from being dry.

Take out can be very tempting after a long hard day; however it isn’t very healthy for you and cost a lot as well. They have family size and single size meals in the frozen food section that you can buy. They may not be as healthy as home cooked but they are still better than take out. And they can be ready in a matter of minutes; probably less time than you would spend getting the take out. They also have meals for slow cookers that you can just put in a slow cooker and leave. What ever you choose remember to add vegetables at home as well.

Whether you are looking to save time or money, or just eat better, these tips for healthy eating are just what you need.

As a parent of three young children (and deep into middle age) I’m a lot more concerned about the food we eat. Especially at breakfast.

Breakfast cereal is good. Right?

For some reason most of us think cereals and especially muesli are good for us and our family. Of course, there are the obvious examples but surely grains and milk are are a healthy way to start the day.

If only it were so.

Are your kids eating a bowl of sugar?

Eating a healthy breakfast or a bowl of sugar?

Take 2 minutes and check the levels of sugar in the cereals your kids are eating. Go on, I’ll wait.

Surprising isn’t it?!?

Even the so-called ‘healthy’, ‘whole grain’, ‘all natural’, ‘real fruit pieces’ claims can mask sugar levels of 25%. And more.

Healthy foods aren’t always healthy I’m afraid.

The good news of breakfast cereal.

The good news is there are a few really healthy breakfast cereals on the market.

The first place to look is not the the front of the pack. That’s where all the marketing hype is. Go straight to the back. Check out the nutritional panel. There’s no hype there. Just facts.

DIY breakfast ideas

If you can’t find something healthy and low in sugar, it’s pretty easy (and cheap) to make you’re own. Plus, you can tailor it to suit your tastes.

Try nuts like:

almond flakes

hazelnuts

linseed

walnuts

Seeds like:

sunflower

pepitas

sesame

Grains (whole) like:

Oats

Puffed wheat

Fruit (fresh is best)

Whatever’s in season

Kids favourites

Berries

Green apples, sliced or grated

Develop your own breakfast recipes. Share them with friends.

Maybe one day they’ll be so popular you can market them.

Enjoy!

Whole wheat pancakes with fruit is a wonderful way to start your day. Eating healthy is hard when the foods you have to choose from are somewhat less than desirable. I have found that whole wheat pancakes topped with fruit instead of super sweet syrups is actually quite the treat. It’s almost as though the two were meant to go together.

Offering whole wheat pancakes for breakfast, Sunday brunch, or even a breakfast-for-dinner meal is sure to be a crowd pleaser. In addition it offers you a great dose of fiber that will keep you healthier and stick with you longer than the average breakfast.

Making the expense and effort to eat whole wheat pancakes should not be wasted by the pouring high sugar syrups and dessert toppings all over you plate. There are so many other toppings available that provide the sweetness we all desire and doesn’t have the bad side effects of a high sugar content. Fruit or yogurt or both together seem to blend so well with the nutty taste of wheat pancakes.

Try something like blueberries or raspberries heated with a few teaspoons of lemon and a couple teaspoons of natural cane sugar. The warm topping comes with a lot less sugar than the high fructose corn syrup alternative and is so inviting on a cool morning. It will soak into your whole wheat pancake creating a great taste and texture.

Here is a great recommended recipe: Use blue berries or raspberries or whatever berry you like and add five tablespoons of lemon juice and heat to boiling. Stir in one third cup cane sugar or equivalent in sugar substitute if you have it. Let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes until it starts getting a little thicker. Remove from heat and serve.

Once the scent of sweetened and heated fruit starts creeping around the house you will have curious visitors looking forward to a delicious treat. There is something about a hot berry topping poured over whole wheat pancakes that creates such a wonder taste combination.

Whole wheat pancakes are a healthy, more natural way to start your morning. The advantages of whole wheat to your health are well known. Offer them to your own family and make breakfast an event that everyone looks forward to.

Even if it’s only done on the weekends, getting together for a delicious meal is a treat for all. When you serve healthy whole wheat pancakes topped with warm yummy fruit toppings everyone will enjoy, you get an event that will last. The benefits of the whole wheat pancakes will give you the health and energy to enjoy the day, the benefits of eating a delicious meal together will last long after.

Almost daily in the news we see reports of chocolate’s health benefits. It’s a potent antioxidant, and is chock-full of chemicals and nutrients that have been attributed to making us happy. Yet many of us remain skeptical; eating lots of chocolate doesn’t seem to make us feel better, and in fact can lower energy levels for awhile. So what gives? If chocolate is such a miracle food, shouldn’t we be able to eat it all the time, without guilt and feel great? Well, yes, we can, but the way chocolate is prepared is crucial to unlocking its true potential as a health food. If you’d like to learn how to have a healthy dose of chocolate daily, read on…

Raw, unroasted chocolate IS A MUST to really reap the health benefits. Little of this fact is given weight in the mass-media’s portrayal of chocolate’s health benefits, but its the crucial point for anyone interested in bettering their health naturally. There’s a big difference in the chemical composition of un-roasted, naturally-dried chocolate when compared to 99% of the chocolate products available today. Nearly every single chocolate bar or drink, even at the large-chain heath food markets, is made from chocolate that’s been roasted at high temperatures. ‘Organic’ does not mean raw; chocolate powder is not raw unless it says its raw. High-end organic hot chocolate drinks are still roasted, and likely processed with alkali to make them dissolve more easily. Why the roasting and processing? Because we’ve become accustom to chocolate looking and tasting like it has since our childhoods. Working with raw chocolate (called Cacao – note this is different than Cocoa!), like so many things that are really good for you, is best prepared at home using carefully selected ingredients. It’s easy to do, and we’ll include some recipes at the end. But first back to the question of why raw is better.

Energy and stimulation is at the heart of the chocolate experience, but many people are sensitive to chocolate’s effects. There are however, significant differences in the alkaloid structures of raw and roasted chocolate. Raw chocolate’s stimulation comes primarily from theobromine, which has little anxiety producing effects. Studies by natural wellness professionals and user reports both note that while commercially prepared dark chocolate has a very stimulating action that caffeine sensitive individuals may find too strong, an equivalent amount of raw cacao does not. The stimulating effects are reported mild, gentle, and without a ‘crash’ that is often associated with caffeine. A reason for mothers to think about creating their own raw chocolate treats for their children, too. The jury is still out on the actual amount if caffeine in raw chocolate; some investigators have found none, some have found small amounts in the ‘skin’ of the cacao beans, and others of found only small amounts in beans that have fermented somewhat (an indication of a lower-quality cacao). Either way, if you’ve refrained from chocolate because of it’s caffeine content, raw cacao may just be your answer to enjoying this treat again.

The really big news about chocolate has been it’s antioxidant profile. Chocolate contains significant amounts of polyphenols — the same important antioxidants found in green tea, red wine and green apples — but in greater amounts. Dark chocolate contains an impressive 5% of these compounds, yet raw chocolate is made up of an incredible 10% concentration of these possibly life-extending molecules. Both roasting and processing with alkali (to make Dutch cocoa) reduce antioxidant concentration. Further, the increased absorbability of powdered raw cacao (perhaps the most versatile form of raw chocolate) over cacao nibs give them an edge in ORAC value, a measure of Oxidative Radical Absorbance Capacity.

Finally, the question of mood-enhancing neurochemicals and precursors. Chocolate contains significant quantities of the essential amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan intake has recently been collated with neurogenesis, the development of new brain cells, and both long and short term memory. The presence of tryptophan is critical for the production of serotonin, a primary neurotransmitter associated with mood (Prozac works on the principal of enhancing the action of serotonin). Once in the body tryptophan reacts with B-vitamins in the presence of magnesium (all present in raw chocolate) to produce serotonin. Enhanced serotonin function assists in diminishing anxiety and stress – ccording to Dr. Gabriel Cousens, serotonin is literally our “stress-defense shield.” Tryptophan is heat sensitive and is often deficient in many cooked-food diets, even when animal protein intake is high. In addition to tryptophan (but not heat sensitive) chocolate also contains PEA, the ‘love hormone’ and Anandamide the ‘bliss chemical’.

Convinced? Ready for a little raw chocolate power? First its critical to find a good source; make sure the chocolate you’re buying is raw – it’s most often labeled as ‘Cacao’, the name for the raw chocolate beans and the tree on which they grow. Cacao nibs are small pieces of pure raw chocolate that can be eaten straight, or mixed with other healthy snacks like dried fruits. But the best-loved raw chocolate preparation is the original chocolate drink: hot chocolate. Now it won’t be hot enough for long enough to convert any chemicals or to cook the chocolate, just to make it a warm comforting drink – and of course, heating the water isn’t necessary at all (though in recipes calling for Coconut oil, it helps to blend the oil into the drink). So to make a cup, use powdered raw chocolate (grinding the nibs or beans in a coffee grinder can work, though you’ll find this challenging as the natural oils in the chocolate will heat up and liquefy before the grinding is complete, leaving little crunchy bits). Put one or two tablespoons powdered chocolate, one to two teaspoons raw dark agave nectar (a low-glycemic index natural sweetner) and one to two teaspoons of Coconut oil in a blender. Add eight to twelve ounces almost-boiling water and blend for ten seconds. That’s it! You’ll find your personal favorite formula after a few preparations – more or less chocolate, oil, sweetener or water.

There are many, many recipes available online and in books about raw chocolate. Some favorite additions to the drink are Maca (Peruvian Ginseng), essential oils like Vanilla, Peppermint or Orange (just one drop is often enough) or a little powdered cinnamon. Raw chocolate bars for your family are very easy to make, really just by omitting the water and adjusting the oil and sweetener ratios to make a thick chocolate paste. Add some chopped nuts if you like, press into a casserole dish and put it in the refrigerator long enough to make it firm. Experiment; it’s chocolate! You’re supposed to have fun. And with raw chocolate, it might be the most fun you can have eating while positively and naturally benefiting your health.
