Here’s some ideas and recipes for healthy meals inspired by beautiful Bondi Beach. My local beach for 40+ years. This article mainly concentrates on a healthy breakfast. Bondi is an active, energetic, vibrant place, especially in the morning. I work-out there 3-4 times a week from 6-7am with a friend. (Thought some days. like today, we decide just to wander about and grab a coffee. Bondi has great coffee). Bondi is just 7 kilometres from the CBD of Sydney. So many people work-out each morning before going into work. There’s not many better ways to start the day than with a surf. Bondi... [Read more...]

Importantly, Low GI is just one of a few ideas to keep in mind when looking to manage weight or be healthy. The other ideas include ensuring you eat more and more fresh, natural, unprocessed foods and simply move more – get out and about and move your body. What’s a Low GI Diet? Eating foods low on the glycemic index are great way to live a healthier lifestyle. The opposite is true of eating foods high in sugar. Fortunately, low GI diets and foods are becoming more and more popular. People realise just how easy a low GI diet is to follow everyday and every meal. More importantly, they feel the benefits of sustained energy levels and feeling fuller for longer. On the other hand, excess sugar continues to dog our diet. It’s amazing just how many products we eat have high levels of sugar. No surprise about soft drinks but even those functional waters have loads of sugar... [Read more...]

There is no better way to start your day than with breakfast. Your body needs to ‘break the fast’ it’s been on for the last 8-10 hours since it’s last meal. We often place breakfast cereal in the ‘healthy’, ‘good for me’ category. It must be to do with the ingredients – grains, dried fruit and the milk we add. I wish it was so simple. Are you eating a healthy breakfast cereal or a bowl of sugar? More and more we’re becoming aware of just how much sugar many cereals contain. The sugar is either naturally occurring in the ingredients or... [Read more...]

Cereals are a quick and easy breakfast, they require little time to make and are as simple as pouring some into a bowl and adding milk. They make a great summer breakfast, as they do not need to be heated up and they are a favorite of children world-wide. So what is the problem with most cereals, even so-called healthy mueslis? Put simply, they are so full of high glycemic index GI carbohydrates and sugar that you’re feeling hungry in just a few hours and craving a sugar hit. That’s not good news if you’re looking after your health and your waistline. Now, more than ever, low glycemic breakfast... [Read more...]
THE GLYCEMIC INDEX AND YOU

So, what exactly is everyone talking about when they mention this GI or glycemic index thing? Well, basically a glycemic index is a measure of the way in which carbohydrates or carbs, affect a person’s blood glucose levels. But how does low or high glycemic index food work and why is a lower one preferred? High glycemic index foods break down very quickly and release a larger quantity of sugar or glucose into the bloodstream at once. That is why you get a huge sugar rush from your favorite chocolate bar but in an hour’s time feel hungry again (not to mention a little tired). On the opposite... [Read more...]

There are quite a few benefits of a Low GI Diet but I’m just going to talk about my favourite…feeling fuller for longer. First an admission. I’m a serial snacker, greedy comfort eater and, for my efforts, carry an extra 8 kilos, mostly around my tummy. I used to eat 3-4 bowls of cereal every morning (seriously) and thought I was virtuous eating grains and dried fruit. What I’ve come to realise is I was addicted to the carb/sugar hit. It also didn’t occur to me my mid-morning hunger pains were as a result of food I ate 2-3 hours ago. When my business partner Nick mentioned SuperStart cereal... [Read more...]

There’s lots of talk about healthy eating. Everywhere you look there is a new diet that people say you should be following, so what is this low glycemic index diet thing and why exactly should you follow a low GI diet? Well, first things first. Any diet or regimen you follow shouldn’t really be a diet at all, but a lifestyle shift – you have to want to improve your heath as well as your waistline. Making a low GI diet part of your lifestyle is a lot easier than you think and you need not sacrifice all of your favorite meals. In fact, only a little moderation and modification is needed... A big call…”Brilliant Breakfast Ideas”. But I’m ambitious and love to share a good idea. The biggest, most brilliant idea is to actually have breakfast. Maybe not a big idea to you but many people skip the most important meal of the day. The only thing you should skip in the morning are diets that don’t fill you up with natural, healthy, sustaining foods. There is one more thing you should skip (no, not a rope) and that is high carb, sugary, fortified cereals. You know, the ones that taste great and give you a surge of energy (a surge of sugar more like) but leave... [Read more...]
